The startup used Mixpanel to analyze user behavior in its platform. Over time it became clear there was a roughly 40% gap between the usage data the system reported and actual user behavior, which made product decisions difficult. The product team couldn't tell whether the gap came from real user behavior or a measurement problem, and couldn't resolve it on their own.
WHAT WE FOUND
The Configuration, Process, or Architecture Behind the Issue
The issue wasn't with Mixpanel itself, but with the tracking architecture that had been chosen.
All tracking ran through server-side events only, one of three possible ways to measure user behavior (server, client, or proxy), which created major deviations due to browser blocking.
Duplicate events and implementation bugs widened the gap between reported and actual behavior even further.
